Immersive Water Safety

Water safety – from passive learning to life-saving action

At Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service’s Safety Central in Warrington, children step into a fully immersive world designed to teach life skills including water safety.

Designed as a fully immersive, 360-degree experience, the centre guides children through realistic environments where risks and consequences come to life. From full-size railway platforms, busy roads to shops, homes, and courtrooms, each space presents situations that challenge decision-making and awareness.

But one area fell short: Water Safety.

Despite having a structurally sound indoor canal area, the experience lacked impact and engagement due to the lack of real water. So Sliced Bread Animation transformed it.

But how do you teach water safety without water?

With rising drowning incidents across Cheshire’s canals and reservoirs, the need for engaging water safety education has never been greater.

The existing setup wasn’t enough to prepare children for real-world risk.

Our Solution: An Immersive Water Safety Experience

We designed a fully immersive digital installation made up of four interactive stations, placing children at the centre of realistic water safety scenarios.

Installed within the existing canal environment, the experience uses sound, animation, and hands-on interaction to draw children in. Surrounding walls were enhanced with graffiti-style messaging to reinforce key warnings and highlight hidden dangers around water.

Each station aligns with the Royal Life Saving Society UK Water Safety Code:

  • Stop and Think
  • Stay Together
  • Call 999
  • Float to Live

Children don’t just learn the rules. They experience them.

The system supports both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, adapting content and interaction for different ages and abilities.

The Immersive Water Safety Experience

Station 1: Spot the Danger

Children explore environments such as lakes, canals, rivers, reservoirs, and beaches.

Hidden “danger bubbles” reveal hazards when activated, prompting discussion and discovery. Supported by the centre’s characters, Sparky and Havoc, children learn to recognise risks and understand warning signs in a playful but meaningful way.

Station 2: Cold Water Shock Simulation

Children step into a simulated cold-water environment to experience the immediate impact of cold water shock.

An augmented reality overlay visualises physiological responses such as increased heart rate, helping them understand what happens inside the body. Calm voiceover guidance teaches them how to control breathing and stay afloat.

With UK water temperatures often below 12°C, this delivers a critical life-saving lesson in a safe, memorable way.

Station 3: Emergency Response – Make the Right Call

A simulated accident unfolds. Someone has fallen into the water – what do you do?

Children are taught the most important rule: never jump in after someone!

Instead, they search for safe rescue tools. Using NFC-enabled objects, they trigger real-time responses on screen, demonstrating how each item can help save a life without putting themselves at risk.

Station 4: Float to Live

The final station focuses on survival.

Children watch a character transition into a safe floating position, then practise it themselves. A camera tracks their posture, providing real-time feedback.

For younger learners, the guidance is simple and memorable:
“Spread your arms and legs like a starfish.”

When achieved, a visual reward reinforces success, building confidence and retention.

The Impact of Immersive Learning in Water Safety

Water safety is no longer a passive message. It becomes an interactive, immersive learning experience where children are placed at the centre of the action. Instead of simply being told what to do, they explore scenarios, make decisions, and see the outcomes in a safe, controlled environment.

This shift from observation to participation helps transform information into something meaningful and memorable.

As a result, children are not only more engaged, but more physically involved and emotionally connected to what they are learning. This leads to deeper understanding, stronger recall, and increased confidence when faced with real-world situations.

By experiencing the risks and responses first-hand, they are better prepared to recognise danger, stay calm, and act appropriately when it matters most.

Feedback from facilitators has been overwhelmingly positive. Children are more engaged, more curious, and more likely to apply what they’ve learned.

What was once the a lacklustre part of the centre is now one of its most impactful and memorable experiences.
